Big Baggy Jeans
|
In the 90's The rebellious
still wore denim, but it had to be in different finishes, new cuts, shapes, styles, or in the form of aged, authentic,
vintage jeans, discovered in markets, secondhand- and thrift shops, not conventional jeans stores. The jeans in style
did a 180 degree flip from tight to baggy. Finally some sense has come back to everyone who ever wore acid
washed jeans. You might even say the stone age was in, stone wash that is. Baggy Jeans were worn by both girls and boys, the
baggier the better. One factor that young people then often mentioned was comfort. Loose fitting clothing would
seem to be more comfortable than tight clothing. We wonder, however, about comfortable clothes are that are
grossly oversized and that seem to be falling down. The made a social statement, when the style of
baggy jeans first appeared, they were a definite fashion statement. Young people seem to be saying that they
refused to accept adult standards of neatness and objected to the very idea of dressing up. Name brands like JNCO
and Guess making big, baggy jeans and shirts in a variety of colors, the youth market was not particularly interested
in 501s and other traditional jeans styles.
The winds of change are always blowing and as we reach the mid two thousands we see more people returning to the traditional
styles getting hot again. The styles offered are a blend of the old made with new techniques. This does add a new twist to
the old style. We will watch the growing trends and report back as we can.
